Detachable Dog Bow Tie

Despite his Harry Potter roots, Padfoot is quite the Southern gentleman.  He, therefore, requires a bow tie for those extra special occasions.  Padfoot will be graduating for Basic Obedience Class at end of the summer.  Obviously, he needs a bow tie to look good for the occasion.  The summer is also full of parties that I'm sure your dog wants to look special for!

Materials:  Fabric (complementary or matching collar), thread,
One Wrap Hook & Loop Fastening TapeInterfacing, hot glue

Note:  You can use a sewing machine or hand sew this item.

1.  Cut your fabric.  Cut two 4" x 6" pieces of fabric and interfacing.  Cut one 3" x 2" piece of fabric.

2.  Iron interfacing on to the wrong side (opposite pattern) of the 4" x 6" pieces of fabric

3.  Create a "pillow" with your 4" x 6" pieces of fabric.
  • Take the two 4" x 6" pieces of fabric and place them with the right side (pattern side) facing each other and the interfacing side out.  Pin in place.
  • Run a 1/2" seam along the outside edge of the fabric.  Lift the foot, leave the needle in, and rotate the fabric 90 degree when you get within 1/2" of a corner.
  • Leave a large enough hole (about 1") for you to pull the fabric through.
  • Cut out a small square/rectangle at each corner.  Do not cut into the seams.
  • Pull the fabric through the hole.  Now, the right sides should be on the outside and the interfacing sides are on the inside.
  • Fold the fabric 1/2" in at the hole.
  • Run a 1/4" seam around the entire edge.  This will close your hole and help it lay flat.

3.  Quarter fold your 3"x 2" piece of fabric.
  • Fold your fabric along the short side (aka hamburger style).  Iron this fold in place.
  • Fold each side of the long side towards to center.  Iron this fold in place.  Your fabric should not be folded and pleated into even fourths

4.  Create a tube with the fold 3" x 2" piece of fabric.  Fold this piece of fabric in half short ways (hamburger style).  Sew the short edges of the folded fabric together with a 1/8" seam.  Turn it right side out so that the seam is on the inside.

5.  Create your bow tie.
  • Pull your larger piece of fabric through the tube.  You may need tweezers to help you do this.
  • Get the tube to the middle of the fabric
  • Unscrunch the larger piece of fabric until it looks like a bow

6.  Cut a piece of velcro to the roughly four times the width of the collar.  1" collar = 4" of velcro

7.  Attach velcro to your bow tie.  Using hot glue, place a dot of glue on the back of your bow tie in the center.  Stick the fabric to the hot glue with the soft side facing down (touching the glue).

8.  Attach the bow tie to the dog collar.  Wrap the velcro around the dog collar, and attach the bow tie.

9.  Put the collar with bow tie on your dog and make all the other dogs jealous.
